Mackinac Island & Lake Michigan - September 9, 2014

We had heard of Mackinac Island from several friends, so we had to do it.

Mackinac Island is a place where automobiles are not allowed. Horse drawn buggies and carriages, and a million bicycles are the only modes of travel.

We took the Arnold Ferry. For us and our bikes, it was $52.00. We met another RVing couple who are staying at the casino also.

On the 30 minute cruise, we saw lighthouses, the mighty Mac bridge, and big cargo ships, like the Edmund Fitzgerald (only still sailing).

As we approached the island harbor, there was another lighthouse along with a big buoy.

There are some ferry services that are faster, but we chose slower... and cheaper. No need to be in a hurry.

Look at the rooster tail on this ferry.

Our 'boat' was just fine.

After dis-embarking and retrieving our bikes, we started to explore.

What a cool place. Like going back in time. Except for all the tourists. Never seen so many bicycles in one place. And lots of horse-powered rides too!

Donna and I mounted our bikes and drove the outer road completely around the island. It was 8 miles in length. We passed many other bikes and horse-drawn carriages too. We stopped several times to enjoy the beaches and woods, and to munch a bit.

You sure see all kinds of people at a place like this.

After we completed our loop, we stopped for lunch at the Mackinac Island Draught House. We had a light lunch. We shared some chicken strips and each had a flight.

They had quite a few brews on tap.

Donna chose Warlock, Founder's Porter, Dragon's Milk, and Chocolate Marshmallow Stout. I chose Trainwreck, Dirty Blonds, Bonfire Brown, and Horny Monk.

Between us, we tasted a good selection of theirs wares.

Then we killed some time walking around taking pictures while waiting for our ferry back to the mainland.

And back we go.

Back in St. Ignace, we drove over to the west side of town to take some pictures of Lake Michigan.

Now we have visited all 5 of the great lakes.

Bucket list item .... check!

  1. Again, we are so close. We just left St. Ignance Monday. We stayed at the casino too. Bike riding around the island was a blast!
