Donna's Birthday, Galvaston, & Armadillo Eggs - March 2-March 6, 2016

We are kiiling time here at Lake Conroe. Donna has another doctor appointment on Monday, the 7th, for some more routine 'girly' stuff. Meanwhile, we are enjoying the nice weather, re-organizing our storage compartments, and golfing everyday, mini that is. LOL.

Donna's birthday was the 4th. We had a good, busy day. I took her to Wally World and she picked out some new Corelle dinnerware, a new rug for our bathroom, and a nut chopper. Yep, that's what she wanted. Then we were off to Hobby Lobby and Michaels to get her some crochet yarn and stuff so she can make some more goodies. Then back home to do some golfing and watch a movie we rented via Redbox, and snuggle. We got War Room. An excellant movie by the way.

The next day, we took off to explore Galveston. It was a Saturday morning and luckily, traffic through Houston on Interstate 45 wasn't too bad at all.

As we entered Galvaston Island, we headed for the Visitor Center area and made a plan for the day.

First off, we went to the city library accross the street. They had a museum on the 4th floor. Lots of history in this town. We were amazed.

Then we wandered around some of the mansions, old churches, and historic buildings in the area.

A sea going mansion.

There was a Tree Sculpture tour that showed off various wood carvings. Artists have 'breathed life into something that mother nature attempted to destroy'. The big storm in 1900 devastated the city. Then in 2008, Hurricane Ike wiped out most of the trees. They re-planted many, and saved the downed ones by preserving them as works of art. Pretty cool.

We cruised down Seawall Blvd. Beautiful day to enjoy the beaches. We drove by Pleasure Pier, an amusement park on the waterfront. Lots of people out enjoying the day.

We finished the day in Galveston by stopping by Seawolf Park. Home of the American Undersea Warfare Center.

We went through the USS Cavalla, a Gato class fleet submarine. This sub was commissioned in 1944 and on her maiden patrol, sank the 30,000 ton aircraft carrier Shokaku, a veteran of Pearl Harbor and the Battle of the Coral Sea. Pretty cool!

Then we went throught the USS Stewart, a Destroyer Escort. She has crossed the North Atlantic 30 times, with occasional enemy submarine and aircraft encounters. We really enjoyed seeing these ships up close.

We will be back to the Galveston area again, that's for sure.

Now for another 'Texas' thing we have encountered while we were here.... Armadillo Eggs.
I saw an advertisement on TV about these 'things'. The grocery store, HEB, sells them.

They are Jalapenos, stuffed with BBQ seasoned chicken breast, wrapped in bacon. OK! had to try this!

Into the oven they went....

Oh yea!

They didn't dissapoint. Yes, they are as good as they sound!
