AOK RV Campground, Amarillo, TX - March 18, 2016

It was moving day. I was woken up early, at 4 AM, by a pretty good thunderstorm. That's nice...

We watched the lightning and listened to the weather stations. There was a tornado warning just 10 miles south of us. Soon, we got pelted with half inch hail. Thank goodness, no damage. It started to clear and the rain stopped. Cool! Let's get packed up and go!.

Well, almost. As I plugged in my Tire Pressure TPMS, it went off. I even aired up the Jeep tire that was a little low the day before. Now it was a different one. 33 pounds. I should have checked them all. For sure next time. Then the rain started again. Arggg!

The rain stopped again. It was 8:30 AM. I quickly got out the air compressor and checked and topped off all the Jeep tires. The RV looked good. This cold weather really has an effect on tire pressures. While the rain was stopped, we dumped and hooked up the Jeep. Hey! No error light. I guess I wiggled the right wires.

Off we went. Pretty much Highway 287 all the way. It did rain for the next half hour and we saw lots of lightning, but it all was heading for Fort Worth/Dallas, away from our route. They got hammered with big, big hail we later found out.

It was a good drive, a little more than we normally do, 300 miles today. We were going to do the Elks lodge in Amarillo, but found a Passport America park that would do the trick for us. Full hookups, with 50 Amp for $12.50 a night, yep we can do that. We will do 2 days because of a storm (cold front) coming in tomorrow.

There were only 2 spots left when we arrived at the AOK RV Park. No not a KOA by any means, and just barely OK.

Here is the 'park'.

And our spot.

Yes, it will do. Soon the wind picked up and temps dropped fast.

This morning, it had dropped to 44 degrees, 37 by noon. It is supposed to get down to 24 tonight. Looking ahead, we were planning to go north into Colorado, to the Lamar Elks. I see they are going to get down to 11 tomorrow night. OK, plans are changing right now. We will continue west and head north around the cold storm front.

Don't you just love how we can change plans at the drop of a hat?

Our free day in Amarillo, we decided to go out and brave the cold and wind. I don't think we have been this cold since we started our full time travels.

We went to the famous Cadillac Ranch.

This was just the RV park and gift shop. We parked along Interstate 40 and walked into the field where the 'real' Caddys are standing tall. Cool and grafitti covered. Just wish it wasn't so cold. The wind chill was well below zero. We took our pics and scurried back to the Jeep.

Then we stopped off at the Big Texan Steak Ranch.

They have a 72 oz steak that if you can eat it all within one hour, it's free. We saw it, and it was huge! We just looked aound the brewery and gift shop and headed back home where we have two electric space heaters going.

I think we are heading to Albuquerque tomorrow.

Later.....

    1. They sure are. It was a good stop, even though there were a million empty spray cans laying everywhere. There were even people spraying paint while we were there ... in the ripping wind storm.
