I was stationed at Kirtland AFB 1971-1973. In 1972, we saw a bunch of hot air balloons (13 of them) and went to see then. This was the first Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Boy, did it really take off!
I walked down to the other end of the park, where all the balloons will be launching tomorrow.
Then, opening day. We got up at 5 AM, in the dark, and headed out to the shuttle buses. We got on right away and were at the gate in no time. After paying $35.00 a night to boondock in the south lot, we still had to pay for admission into the Fiesta Park. The price was $10.00 per person for each session. There is a morning and evening session each day. We would pay to go in opening day first session. After that, we could see just fine outside the fence from the grassy area next to the Balloon Museum.
Here are some pictures of opening day.
It started with the morning glow.
People everywhere.
Then it was Mass Ascension time, many balloons were filling up.
Launch time.
The shaped balloons were really cool. Stand by for lots of pictures..
This ends the opening day morning session.
We watched the big fireworks show from our RV. Pretty cool!
What a great experience!
Day One!
Fergs .... out!
